Dr. Jayalakshmi P S

Assistant Professor
M.Sc, Ph.D, JRF

Profile

Dr. Jayalakshmi P. S. is an Assistant Professor in Botany at Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam, Kerala, India. She specializes in Phycology with research interests in taxonomy, molecular systematics, biogeography, and molecular ecology of freshwater algae. She completed her Ph.D. in Botany from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, with a focus on the taxonomy of periphytic and macroalgae in the Periyar River ecosystem.

Research

Her research primarily focuses on the diversity, taxonomy, and molecular characterization of freshwater red algae from the Western Ghats of India. She has contributed significantly to the discovery and description of new taxa within Batrachospermales and has worked extensively on algal biodiversity, ecology, and distribution in freshwater ecosystems. Her work integrates classical taxonomy with molecular phylogenetic approaches to understand algal evolution and biogeography.
