Postgraduate and Research Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry established in 1959 as an undergraduate department is one of the most vibrant departments of  M. A College. The department was upgraded to PG department in 1995 and recognized as a Research Centre in 1998. The DBT-Star College supported department offers B. Sc., M. Sc. and Ph. D programmes in Chemistry. Chemistry is offered as a Complementary course to the undergraduate students of Physics, Botany and Zoology programmes. The department has well equipped and modern laboratories for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies. 100% of the faculty members are Ph. D holders as well as research guides who lead research in diverse areas of the subject as well as interdisciplinary areas like nano chemistry, catalysis, organic synthesis, polymer chemistry and co-ordination chemistry. About 100 research papers and one patent have been produced by the faculty and students of the department.

They are also actively involved in institutional and social responsibilities. The department also coordinate a certificate course in Instrumentation. The department has three non-teaching staff to provide all support.
The department regularly conduct international/national conferences, seminars and workshops, the latest being the ‘Nobel Laureate Lecture Series’. Dr. Joachim Frank, 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics & Dept. of Biological Sciences, Columbia University, New York) and Dr. Jean-Marie LEHN, 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Professor, University of Strasbourg Institute of Advanced Study, France) addressed the webinar organised by the department.  Apart from curricular subjects, the department provides personality development and society-oriented programs, placement, career guidance, alumni interactions and opportunities to organize and participate in science exhibitions, competitions, seminars, and conferences. We are committed to prepare skill developed experts in Chemistry by imparting knowledge which focuses on academic competence, social skills and moral values.’ Our commitment to teaching and research has helped the students graduated from the department to excel in academia and industry. The postgraduate students of the department regularly publish research articles in journals of good repute. The Department celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in all grandeur during the academic year 2019-2020.

The department of Chemistry envisions to pioneer in academic quality and research in Chemical Science through our skilled training for undergraduate, postgraduate and research students.

Provide distinctive and relevant education in the Chemical and Material sciences at Post Graduate level.
Carry out world-class research and scholarly work with relevance to the needs of society and industry.
To provide the students with required skills to prepare them for employment in all walks of life.
To prepare students for higher education and research in Chemical Science.

HOD’s Desk

It is indeed a great honour to be the HOD of one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments of M. A College. The UG department established in 1959 was upgraded to PG in 1995 and recognised as a Research Centre in 1998. I can proudly say that Chemistry at MA College is one of the most sought after degree programme for aspiring students from across Kerala.
From its inception, the Department has striven to set high standards of teaching and learning. The galaxy of eminent alumni bears ample testimony to the Department's efforts and dedication of a team of committed faculty members both past and present, guided by able administrators. I am proud to lead a team of seven highly qualified faculty members (100% Ph. D holders), motivated to impart quality education to our students. We are also blessed to have the patronage of our retired faculty members and alumni in all our endeavours.
We hope to provide an excellent atmosphere for higher education and fine tune research aptitude in Chemical Science of our students.
