Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology established in the year 1980 offers undergraduate programme in Sociology with Economics and Politics as subsidiaries. The Department of Sociology envisions excellence in teaching, research, service and support activities for the greater understanding and resolution of societal problems, and promote an intellectually rich and culturally diverse academic community of faculty and students. The department gives platform for the students to enhance  and nourish their skills and capabilities. The department strives to mould value-based, socially committed individuals through effective learning experiences. Various programmes like, field trips, activities, seminars, conferences and workshops are conducted to develop the innate potentials of  the students. Keeping in tune with the changing times, the Department has introduced papers of contemporary relevance like Social Psychology, Human Rights etc.

Every year this department churns out students who perform with flying colours. It intermittently produces university rank holders despite admitting students with average and vernacular-medium background. Field trips , outreach and extension programmes organized for our students   developed the interaction among students and  helped in developing social responsibility. The curriculum offered by the Department provides opportunities  for the holistic development of the students and blends learning  from the classroom with experiential  learning. Moreover, the faculty of the Department strive hard to equip themselves and students with research outputs. Students are encouraged to present papers in both national and international seminars and conferences. The faculty had Major and Minor research projects from prestigious institutions like ICSSR and UGC.

Our vision is to foster an intellectually astute and socially conscious academic community by providing a distinctive perspective on the world around us. We aim to offer deeper insights into the complexities of social existence, shedding light on the intricacies that shape our society.

HOD’s Desk

Welcome to  the Department of Sociology - one of the most fascinating and exciting disciplines in social sciences! It is a science where sociologists offer theories to explain the social world that we live in, and tests them with systematic observation.
Through sociological imagination and phenomenological interpretation we learn to critically understand society and the  societal issues. At the personal level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as romantic love, racial and gender identity, family conflict, deviant behavior, ageing, and religious faith. At the societal level, sociology examines and explains matters like crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, business firms, urban community, and social movements. At the global level, sociology studies such phenomena as population growth and migration, war and peace, and economic development. Sociologists emphasize the careful gathering and analysis of evidence about social life to develop and enrich our understanding of key social processes.
